iPhone 15

iPhone 15 in five colors

Apple Inc. created and released the cellphones known as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. They follow the iPhone 14 as the seventeenth iteration of the device. On September 12, 2023, the 15 Pro and Pro Max variations, Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 were also shown. Pre-orders will be accepted beginning on September 15 for delivery on September 22, 2023.

History

A proposal to require USB-C on all devices in the European Union, including iPhones, was under consideration by the European Commission as of 2021. By 2023, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will abandon its exclusive Lightning connector. In October 2022, the proposal was enacted into law and named the Radio Equipment Directive. Apple declared it will adhere to the rules of the European Union that month.

Specifications

Hardware

The 6.1-inch (155 mm) Super Retina XDR OLED display on the iPhone 15 has a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels and a pixel density of roughly 460 PPI. The 6.7-inch (170 mm) display on the iPhone 15 Plus uses the same technology, has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels, and has a pixel density of roughly 460 PPI. With improved normal brightness up to 1,000 nits, peak brightness (HDR) up to 1,600 nits, and peak brightness (outside) up to 2,000 nits, both versions boast Super Retina XDR OLED displays. The display notch on the iPhone 15 has been replaced by the Dynamic Island feature.

Design

Five new colors—blue, pink, yellow, green, and black—will be offered for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.


Speeds of charging and transfer

While the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max offer greater USB 3.1 transfer speeds (est. up to 10Gbps / 1.25GBps), the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will use USB-C with USB 2.0 transfer capabilities (est. up to 480 Mbps / 60MBps).

Output of Video

With HDR up to 4K quality, DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C video output is supported by all iPhone 15 models.
Due to technological limitations of the Lightning connector, earlier iPhone models (from the iPhone 5 through the iPhone 14) only supported a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 (slightly less than 1080p) using the Lightning Digital AV Adapter.

Battery

Users of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus can watch videos for up to 26 hours and listen to music for up to 100 hours, respectively, while the iPhone 15 delivers somewhat less with up to 20 hours and 80 hours of video and audio playing, respectively.

Software

iOS 17 will ship with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus at launch. Dynamic Island will be present on the phones, including the 15, and 15 Plus variants.
